Why You Should Spend Your Uber Rewards Soon

If you’re a frequent user of Uber or Uber Eats and a member of Uber Rewards, you should make plans to use your remaining points and benefits in the next couple of months. Uber is axing its free loyalty program in favor of its paid monthly subscription—Uber One—after Oct. 31.

Uber Rewards launched in 2018 and allowed members to earn points for Uber rides and Uber Eats purchases, redeemable for discounts and perks through both Uber and other third-party retailers (“Chosen Rewards”). Users also earned points toward membership levels, which unlocked additional perks like ride upgrades and dedicated customer support.

If you’re enrolled in Uber Rewards, you’ll continue to accrue points until Aug. 31, and you’ll have until Oct. 31 at midnight local time to use your remaining benefits. Users at the Diamond tier will still have access to phone support beyond that date.

Points are earned at 1 per dollar spent on Uber Pool, Uber Express Pool, and Uber Eats; 2 per dollar spent on UberX and XL, WAV/Assist, Select, Comfort, and Connect; and 3 per dollar spent on Black, Black SUV, and Green. Driver tips, outside fees, and promotions are excluded from accruing points.

How to redeem your Uber Rewards points

To check your points balance, open your Uber app and go to Menu > Uber Rewards. In the Uber Eats app, this is under “Account.” To redeem your points, tap “Choose rewards” and select from your options. You can also see how you’ve used your past points under “History.”

Alternatives to Uber Rewards

Unfortunately, Uber isn’t replacing its free loyalty option—instead, you’ll have to pay $9.99 per month for access to an Uber One membership, which gets you access to free Uber Eats deliveries and discounts on orders, as well as 5% off Uber rides.

If this is a dealbreaker for using Uber and you have a Chase credit card, Lyft offers up to 10 bonus rewards points per dollar spent on its service. It’s not quite the same as a loyalty program, but at least you earn rewards simply by spending money on the rides themselves. (Lyft also has a membership program, Lyft Pink, that starts at $9.99 per month.)
